The benefit of using separate wineprefixes for individual programs is that you only need to override stuff that doesn't work for that program. Since you've changed operating systems make sure you have a proper graphics card driver installed...the generic drivers windows tries to load often don't support hardware T&L which is a required feature for FFXI to run. Or just binary 00010000000010001111110 setting flags from right to left if its easier to visualize that way (then convert to decimal with your handy calculator). Default is 1111110 and then add 1 << 10 for BRD and 1 << 19 for DNC...so on and so forth. There is also everyone's favorite online calcula...

You have a new minimum gcc version then? I think 4.6 is what we have in the guide.

Its a bit late now but since its relevant I've found RamNode provides pretty awesome service if you are looking for a VPS rather than a dedicated box. I occasionally rent from them for temporary projects where I need reliable and fast hosting. Haven't put it through the ringer for high bandwidth app...
