Shops and Adding Items

I am a total newbie and it seems most people have figured this out on their own, but I am having trouble figuring out how to add items to shops or create a new shop on an NPC. I would love to see a guide, even something basic, on how to create a shop with a custom item sale list, or at least how to add items for sale.
