Deprecated Darkstar fourms

I was recently helping a friend set up for FFXI to play on a DSP server. She is running Windows Vista SP2. I recall in system requirements, that DirectX 8.1 was necessary for the game to run. The catch is, when using the digital files from SE's PlayOnline site, the setup claims to install DirectX. When checking the folder in C:/program files, it's an empty folder. Could someone point me in the direction of a legit installer for DirectX 8.1 that will actually install? Or can a more up to date DirectX be used instead?

A Google search should point you to a Microsoft page where you can download it.. But I have to ask.. Vista!? She missed out on free upgrades to 7 and 10..

directX 9c installer is what you want to.

That works for all direct x requirements prior to 10.

She's using the Vista machine just for playing FFXI. She has a Windows 8.1 and a Windows 10 for her business machines.
