DS and Client Update(s)

Hello, just had a couple quick questions.
I last completed the full installation process around October of last year.
I keep tabs on the forums, but haven't seen anything lately in regards to major or progressive updates, unless I missed it.
More specifically, in what I have installed, Blue spells are extremely limited.
I'm just using it as a solo play server, completing story lines, and for the most part everything works well.
So I was wondering if I'm behind in DS updates, and if so, how do I go about performing those updates?
I found a guide on the forums a while ago, but have since been unable to find it again.
And on a side note, how often should Client updates be preformed, or should they be done hand in hand?
Any help would be appreciated.
