This used to work pre-revision-2012, so I don't think so.

Just in case, you checked the server output ? Usually after creating a character something goes wrong and the server will tell you about invalid key.

If so, close your FFXI and wait for the server window to show that it disconnected your session because of the time out.

Then try and login again, should let you go through. (I hope)

I recreated your scenario in my test server, I am able to make Michael as character. Use Navicat and open Chars table and delete record of Michael if it's still there. Make sure your servers are not running, so exit them all out before you delete record of Michael. Another thing maybe is to check POL for error and FFXI files for error. update it or repair, then apply a fresh batch of the FFXI patch. Make it work on localhost first before you attempt local server or public to isolate the issue. I hope this helps you.

I can't check it on localhost before connecting because localhost for the server doesn't run Windows, therefore doesn't run the FFXI client. I will try the rest though...

After shutting down all the servers, deleting Michael from the db, restarting the servers and attempting to connect with ffxiboot, I tried to create Michael and got a POL-3101. I'm checking files now. Do I need to reapply the client patches and check files again?

yeah but you should back up the files you are going to overwrite which is simple enough to do. I find that if I patch first and repair or update, there's always 1 file broken. So yeah if you repair/update, you should re-apply patch but back up those files first. They are very easy to identify.
If you unzip the patch in a folder and look at them, you will also find these files in your Play Online/SquareEnix/FINAL FANTASY XI folder. you basically back up all files except any of those folders. Zip your back up if you like. Lastly, copy the folder "Data" from Play Online/SquareEnix/PlayOnlineViewer to your Play Online/SquareEnix/FINAL FANTASY XI folder after you patch. Good luck, have fun, I hope this helps you.

My problem still exists. I have followed the linux guide to the letter several times now. Just think if someone new to DS tried this and ran into the problems that I have. Has anybody bothered to try this scenario on Linux? Or are you guys assuming that since it works on Windows, it doesn't matter if it works on Linux? It's been my experience that people who are satisfied enough with M$ Winblows and never try Linux don't really 'get' what stability is about. My Linux server box runs 24/7/365, usually without a reboot. Winblows expects a reboot every time there's a system update. Let's try this another way. I'm at revision 2015. Is there a way for me to acquire the files from a previous revision?

I have determined that the problem is under the character selection button. I would fix it in the code, but the code makes no sense to me. At least half of it looks like C, (I used to use C occassionally before I got tired of everyone on programming lists griping at me because I wasn't using C++) and there's an utter lack of comments. As I'm sure you know, the preferred strategy is to provide a comment at the top of every function/method saying what that function/method is supposed to do.

Unfortunately our main *nix helper-guy seems to be on an extended afk, that's why he's not replying.. DSP support for Linux isn't official, heck we have a hard enough time to get it to run on Windows correctly ;)

You can go to any revision that you want, just update to that revision. I'm not all familiar with the command line for svn, but I'm sure a quick trip to Google can help you out.

Is there any danger of complications resulting from running one version's dsconnect with another version's dsgame and dssearch?
