ok so followed the set up to a tea (including looking at how to link steam version with ashita). I get to the ashita dos screen thing and I connect to the server however when it sends account Id, it says "closing..." and closes. a friend tried it on my laptop also with his character and it did the same.. any ideas whats wrong?

If your FFXI is fully updated, copy your 'data' folder from /PlayOnlineViewer/ to /FINAL FANTASY XI/.

already done that I am afraid but still does the same thing.

Have you tried running as admin?
(Haven't had an issue with the launcher in like, forever so not sure what the exact cause is)

If the launcher just says closing after logging in it is one of two things typically:
- Your install of FFXI is invalid / corrupted / not fully done.
- You need to Run as Administrator.

Well I have friend using windows 8, and theirs does that, loads Ashita and then pops up closing, I try everything. Their ffxi fully updated and all that.

Better if you post your version of the game here, just to make sure you actually updated the thing.
OS makes no difference, this game runs flawlessly in all current Windows editions.

Had a friend that said it was (updated), but it turns out he was attempting to update POL and not FFXI.

Mine's currently Ver.30140521_0 for example.
This is not the latest. When you update, you should get a date\number higher than this.

latest ver is 30140612_1

I can't verify atm, but can't not doing the part "Configure the ZoneIP for the Map Server" part or not updating after an IP change cause anything similar?

well to them they say it updated. but most time could installed it bad and didn't update correct. So most like myself I use remote to fix it.
