Found the problem and you won't believe it. The New Adventurer Status ? icon next to your name causes this problem, not even joking. LOL! I found this because right after you zone you have no ?/LS icon next to your name for a second and then it loads. Before it loaded I noticed footstep sounds played so I decided to get to 10 and soon as it disappeared, bam! Shit was normal again.

(Did I post this in the wrong section? Kind of went to post impatiently.)

Hey, can I get some help with this please? I've tried just about everything and even more. I first noticed this strange issue upon reinstalling the game after my friend mentioned he wouldn't mind trying out the game. I found a server to play on. Did the usual game installation and updating. When I logged in I was surprised to hear that when I would walk/run my footsteps wouldn't make any sounds. I can't, with much effort, find the cause of this issue. Here is a list of fixes I've tried thus far:

• Reinstalled game onto a different drive
• Multiple file repairs
• Bypassed Ashita and just ran FFXI-Bootmod from the command prompt
• Unset read-only on the whole game folder
• Set 'run as administrator' compatibility flag for pol.exe, ashita.exe
• Tried running the game with Windows XP, Vista and 7 compatibility modes
• Switched from my ASUS Xonar DG sound card to my onboard
^tried changing from 5.1 speakers to 2 speakers, disabled GX mode, nothing
• I wiped my C drive and reinstalled Windows 7 (I was using 8.1 Pro before, although I actually formatted my PC for a different reason)
• Changed folder ownership from Administrators to my local user account
• Tried using the full installer from http://www.playonline.com/ff11us/downlo ... l_win.html instead of using my DVD
• I even joined quite a few other servers to see. Didn't hear my footsteps on them, either.
• Tried placing IndirectSound dsound.dll into FINAL FANTASY XI main directory to force FFXI to use software audio

I was playing on a server called DaFunk about 6 months ago. I could hear footsteps in that server just fine. Was considering trying the game on my other PC but I don't even think that would work, tbh. The server admins (who request not to be named) tell me it's a local thing. How can this be a local thing when I follow their directions for setting up my game? I was also told that on the bug tracker, because I thought it was a bug so I reported it as such.

The closest I got was being able to hear a single footstep when moving right after zoning into a different area. Man, this is maximum level frustrating for me. When you get used to something so simple and that function you come to expect just suddenly ceases, it can really drive a (OCD, mind you) person insane. :(

EDIT: Oh I forgot to mention that when I tested this by logging into Live servers all audio was working as the developers intended. :)

Only thing I can think of is the runspeed set on the server

That's what I was thinking. I mentioned it twice but they disagreed with me and insisted that it was on my end. :(

how the hell would they have any idea that their settings would cause that if i don't even know?

I just started up my own server this last week and this lack of step noise seemed to only be apparent in the starting zones. Stick with it a bit longer and see if it fixes itself.

Someone suggested that I see if I can hear them in first person view, no luck there. I can't play like this, I just can't. I've been trying to think of possible causes for the past few days and I just can't come up with anything. This video I recorded basically shows that just after zoning the footstep sounds are trying to play. You can hear a few, really fast and then nothing.

I tried in two different servers. Both having different movement speed settings. One is extremely fast and the other is much more retail-like. Same results except for that after zoning, in the slower server, I could only hear 1 or 2 steps. Where in the other, faster movement server, I could hear 4 to 5. Then silence.

The one question that I want answered is, why does this only seem to affect me? I would like to think this is affecting other people as well, but they probably don't care at all or play with all sound off. I would love to test movement speed settings on the Darkstar Test Server with the help of some admins, if at all possible.

just get your own server and test it on there

That would require me to install all the programs and dependencies for compiling programs and running them. It would be very time consuming. I don't know that much about the subject.

What's the point of the test server if you don't test stuff? :(

they test stuff, just not stuff that requires giving GM to random people

I didn't ask for GM privileges. I asked for the "help of SOME adminS" I didn't say "give me admin" :P
