I am just curious if there are any Progression servers out there that are planning on starting with no expansion or RoZ and releasing expansions slowly from there? Everything classic. Kind of like what Project 1999 is doing for Everquest 1?
Or if anyone is planning a server like this and is gonna start with a solid playerbase? I know a ton of people who would be interested in something like this.
Progression Server?
Re: Progression Server?
The problem is when you create a server, it doesn't instantly have 100 people. It grows gradually as word spreads.
With the amount of knowledge about FFXI now, vanilla FFXI doesn't offer enough content to be more than 2-3 months for players that know what they're doing. And it takes that long to get 20 players. At that point do you release an expansion? Then your next 30 players join 3 months after that, and so on.
When I created my server, the first 3 months I had like 10-15 players. Then grew to 25 players. If I went with progression, I'd lose my first players because they'd get bored waiting for enough people to release another expansion.
If you think there's a market for it, create it! Where are these ton of people that are interested in something like that now? What are they doing?

Re: Progression Server?
I respectfully disagree, as I think you are wrong on your assessment on a couple levels. One of the great things about FFXI is theres so much to do on one character you can't get bored bored in 2-3 months, (maybe maybe get bored of engame content but obtaining every single piece of gear for you main in 2-3 months?) Obviously RoZ would need to come relatively quick however. "Quit" Idk if quit is the right word, they invested time your server, I see it more likely being a "Break" until the next expansion comes out. Currently theres 1300 ppl on Project 1999 during primetime with Scars of velious expansion due out in the near future with what I hear about 1000 more players returning to the game when that happens. A majority of the people playing on A FFXI private server obviously have an extreme love and passion for the game anyways and doubtfully quit in 2-3months, as they probably enjoy a handful of jobs and want to level them and gear them.nasomi wrote:The problem is when you create a server, it doesn't instantly have 100 people. I also feel like the implementation is wrong for building a popular server. It seems people just open servers out of nowhere. Rather than giving a specific date in the future when a server will be launched, and advertising it as such. I'm guessing this is difficult though as square enix likes to shut these servers down. Though I still feel it possible if you got people on a mailing list. (Though I don't know the specifics of this to well.)
I would host my own server but I neither have the knowledge of running one of owning one, but I know there is a market for it as I've googled such server and there threads of people wanting something like this on all kinda of FFXI fan sites. Not to mention a ton of people I've mentioned this type of server to as I dabbled in many unsatisfacory MMORPG's of late. However, if anyone were planning a server like this, I would love to help anyway I can.
I am glad to see your server growing Nasomi, as I have been apart of it lately as well. I hope it continues to grow exponentially! I think dual boxing should be banned though
