ok I am curious, I would like to know the smallest anyone has made ffxi os and all
I have managed to fit everything required to build and maintain the game in 28GB of space in a windows vm
what is the smallest anyone's been able to obtain.
(I'm betting I could get it smaller on Linux)
I'm asking because I'd love to put it on one 25GB bluray disc and make it easier for my friends and I to play on laptops.

the database has to be able to grow. unless you off site it.
but the server with all file files for developing with website and all on my end is not even 1 gig.
but if you just had the server files and not the whole thing no website no DB because you off sited the DB
it would be about 28mb of space.
if you wanted to do something like that you would have to find a location some where you could get a free database, something with a wild card % so you can connect to it from any computer any where with your own username and password then set up your database off site, and use the config files to connect to MySQL database and then once its all working burn it on a disk take it with you start it up and play anytime any where.

you are talking about the game client final fantasy xi online..
this would be very tricky to do.. it will not work on a disk on any other computer other then the one it was installed on.
the reason why is because of the registry.
and the game it's self is only 13gb with the server core would be maybe 14 gigs if that.. so you have room to do it all.
and if you wanted to try to install the game and everything on a disk so you can take it to friends you would need to find every registry key ffxi makes and installs on your PC
and make a registry.reg and if your able to do that then you have successfully made a no install ffxi client..
and then you would also run into the two system bits of 64 or 32. yours might be 64 and your friends might be 32. then the registry would not work.
good luck!
if I was going to do that I would
format my whole PC
dump my registry into a reg file
install ffxi and do all updates for ffxi
then dump my registry again.
then I would have two to compare
I would then use a compare tool to see all the changes. and make a custom registry for the no install client.
im trying to understand what your meaning.
your saying you have 28gb and you want to know how small you can make the final fantasy xi GAME??
or the server??
or all of it together in one?
and your trying to install it all on a blue ray disk so you can travel and give it to friends? and all they have to do is put the disk in and play because the database is all connected off site so you think that would work??
you see I do not really know what your saying if that's not it..
and that would work if your had also all the registry of the game register on all the PCs you run the disk on.
but you would also run into more problems..
one if your Blue ray disk is on disk drive F:/
and your friends is on disk drive G:/ it would not work..
reasons being the registry would look for the game on F:/ not G:/
so the registry again would have to be modified.
but how ever if you made a registry .bat to install the registry and set vars for the location of the drive then on install you could make it work.
its a lot of work and I do not think any one would really take the time to do it all.
and if you did then you might as well do it right and make a C# install program for that game.

lol you keep over-complicating what im trying to say, but that is a rather intriguing way to do things XD
I was going to puta linux vm on the disc and run it that way or windows
"your saying you have 28gb and you want to know how small you can make the final fantasy xi GAME??
or the server??
or all of it together in one?"
I think it would be cool though to have the whole installation on one 25GB blu-ray disc in vm format
has anyone in the FFXI project made it so we can restore the game from game files adn reg just in case yet?

If you haven't tried already, you can use something like nlite to squeeze down the os size. XP with .NET framework should be doable at most 3GB.
Other options:
Use a virtual hdd file, and only put the game+server files, and mount the virtual hdd and run the software on the native os.
Or:
Run the server in VM, and use virtual hdd+native os just for game.

Meh.. why a Blu ray? Use flash drives.. 32gb flash drives are right around 20-30 bucks nowadays.
