Windows 8

Post by ik2012 » Mon Jan 21, 2013 12:13 pm

Hey all. Thinking about upgrading to 8 soon, just wondering if anyone has experience with FFXI/Darkstar and Windows 8? Any compatibility issues? Thanks!

AFAIK if you start out with the updated POL installer for Vista/7 you should be OK

Why? Just curious... I can live with the start screen and if it gets too annoying I can always replace it with the old style start menu. Multi monitor support sounds a little wonky but I'm sure I could work around it. There is some interesting stuff going on underneath the new glossy exterior, such as storage spaces and hyper-v.

Whasf, thanks. I wasn't expecting any big hurdles. I should be doing this soon, I'll be sure to report back if I run into any difficulty.

FFXI itself works fine on Windows 8. I personally don't have access to a Win8 box to test DSP to say anything about that though.

Well, in my personal and professional opinion, windows 8 is the new vista in terms of functionality and ease of use. I truly hate it.

I'm using Windows 8 Pro and have absolutely no problems whatsoever with Project Dark Star or Final Fantasy XI Online + Ashita at all!
Everything works perfectly.

Unlike everyone else i actually like Windows 8 far more, everything is in almost the exact same place as 7 except for the start menu, and if you still don't know the keyboard shortcuts to get to the stuff u need, it's still pretty easy to get there with your mouse.
Better memory management, built in antivirus and no more crazy-scrolling to find applications in that ridiculous Vista\7 start menu! Still not as snappy to launch stuff as Windows XP but RocketDock has been helping me with that since Vista.

Oh how life would be easy if I knew the name of every single application by heart.
And no, life is not that easy (AT ALL) unfortunately.

Upgrade price is gonna go up in February tho, so whoever is thinking of upgrading should think about it soon, no point wasting money later.

Awesome! Thanks Inu. Glad to hear there is at least one person on the web that likes Win 8 xD

I may or may not have gotten my upgrade license for $16... shhh don't tell anyone lol. I agree, far better to buy a license now, than wait another couple of days and get shafted. $40 is still a steal compared to the new pricing coming into effect on 2/1
