I should be back on within like a week or two... just waiting on a new HDD for laptop... still cant figure out how to get all my data off the busted one tho... I've just been booting ubuntu via usb but it wont load me mount or unlock the C: drive...

Because Ubuntu cant read a NTFS partition. When you have your new drive loaded with windows mount the old HDD as a second HDD and see if you can read the data. If not its toast and not worth the cost to recover.

... but I can read the D: drive on the same HDD via Ubuntu...? The C: drive is the one with the bad sector.
