Domain instead of IP?

I was thinking of purchasing a domain to have pointed at my server, but before wasting money I was curious if we are able to put said domain name in the IP column of the zone settings table thereby saving the hassle of updating and restarting the server when the IP changes.

That won't work, it has to be an IP address

depending on your isp, ip's generally don't change often. I run into it maybe once a year.
