Sneak Attack + Weapon Skill
I've searched the forums and the bug tracker but couldn't find anything about it so here goes:
I've noticed that Sneak Attack is not connecting with any Weapons Skills. Tried it dozens of times with the same equipment, at the same level on a single family of mobs (all IT). At no point did I get the feeling that SA enhanced the damage. I was consistently able to deal more damage by using SA separately. Is this a known thing or is there something wrong on my end? Sneak Attack is a pretty major ability so considering I can't find any previous reports of this it might as well be an issue with my configuration.

Re: Sneak Attack + Weapon Skill
I noticed this as well, I was never able to see an increase in dmg when doing sneak attack + viper bite.
I think sneak attack is only suppose to stack with weapon skills that can "crit"

right now SA applies (or should be applying, i'm just reading the code here) bonus damage as THF main to every WS
the function looks okay, but there might be something else stopping it from working
can you provide some actual data, if it's not too much? (i'd test myself, but i have no free time until wednesday)
Re: Sneak Attack + Weapon Skill
Wait, does it only work if THF is the main job in the current version?
We were playing as DRG/THF and DRK/THF the whole time.
I cross-checked the weapon skills with the FFXI Wiki and they should have connected with SA.

Re: Sneak Attack + Weapon Skill
earlier i was referring to the bonus damage from dexterity (i assumed we were talking about thf main)hakusho wrote:Wait, does it only work if THF is the main job in the current version?

the wiki does not state if the weapon skill receives bonus damage because of critting (in fact, it doesn't even state anywhere that a weapon skill 'crits' with sneak attack - only that the hits are guaranteed to hit)hakusho wrote: I cross-checked the weapon skills with the FFXI Wiki and they should have connected with SA.
BG wiki says it allows WS that normally don't crit to crit, which wouldn't be the case right now with our WS (right now, if a WS is flagged as cannot crit, SA does not add crit damage)
so now it's unclear what the list in ffxiclopedia is referring to then... looking at it again, it may just be listing all physical damage based WS (it would be so much easier to just say it doesn't work on magic damage WS...)
i think i can fix this, however like i said earlier, i won't have time to test it until thursday evening and I don't want to commit anything I havn't tested so if you want to wait until then ^^

Re: Sneak Attack + Weapon Skill
I could have sworn viper bite critted. I'll do some research on it. I remember sneak attack + viper bite being the uber thing for thf's to do.
The dmg does seem unreasonably low either way. (meaning I can do 200+ dmg sneak attacks on a regular swing, but the ws dmg is 30ish dmg)
edit...
Well ffxiclopedia say's sneak attack stacks with viper bite.

I'll plug it into the way back machine and see what it says about a few years ago.

Re: Sneak Attack + Weapon Skill
Here is an archive link from October 2007
It say's viper bite + sneak attack stack also.

Might it be that sneak attack hasn't been coded to allow for it to stack with appropriate weapon skills.
Off the top of my head I think it stacks with non-magical weapon skills. But anything pure magic like Gust Slash or Energy Drain would not crit with sneak attack.

Re: Sneak Attack + Weapon Skill
oh, sorry
when i said "a WS flagged as cannot crit" i meant the native WS critting (ie: "Critical hit varies with TP" are the only WS that can technically crit)
so viper bite cannot crit without SA
BUT: currently this is not taken into account, so the SA+WS will only add the DEX bonus. obviously this is incorrect (though I can see why the original author of the WS functions would make this mistake, the wikis are really confusing on this point - does 'work with sneak attack' imply crit, dex bonus or only 100% accuracy? BG says the first, and that list in your last post lists every non-elemental WS, so i'm inclined to believe that every non-elemental WS should crit with SA)
so what SHOULD happen is that every non-magical WS crits with SA, but only WS with crit varying with TP crit without it
also a different issue: SA guarantees hit with MH/OH, and only MH is guaranteed right now (during WS)
i'll fix both of these later this week

Re: Sneak Attack + Weapon Skill
I've tested it with Skewer, which has the "Critical hit varies with TP" description and it didn't work.
Thanks for looking into this. It'll make my next FFXI session with my brother so much more fun!
