Steam and Ashita?

Post by namine207 » Fri Dec 27, 2013 1:13 pm

Hello!

I've been trying to see if I can get the Steam Overlay to work with Ashita. I used to use MXI, but now that most of the plugins crash the game, it's not really worth it. :\ However, whenever I load Ashita as a Non-Steam Game, it only seems to recognize the Ashita window, rather than the loaded game.

Is there any way to get FFXI to work with Steam via Ashita?

Thanks!

Good question! Atom0s should be able to answer this (if it's possible, and if he'll do it) :-)

Whoa! That was a really fast response. XD Thanks! I hope this'll be able to work, it's the one thing I miss from mXI. :)

Yes you can use the Steam overlay with Ashita. You just have to launch the game a little differently.
To get Ashita to work with Steam do the following:
  1. Open your Steam Library which shows a list of all the games you own/have installed.
  2. At the bottom left, click 'ADD A GAME'.
  3. Choose 'ADD A NON-STEAM GAME' from the list.
  4. When the list of applications appear, choose browse and look for the 'Ashita.exe' in your Ashita folder.
  5. Select it and then click 'ADD SELECTED PROGRAMMS' button.
Next you need to alter the command line for Ashita to launch a specific configuration to play. Without this Steam will not properly attach to FFXi and will not work. So you may need to add multiple instances of this if you play on more than one server.

To edit the command line, now do the following:
  1. Open your Steam Library and locate the Ashita entry you just added following the steps above.
  2. Right-click it and choose 'Properties'.
  3. Where it says 'Target:' you need to edit this line to include the path to the configuration you use to launch FFXi.
For example, my configuration is named PrivateServer.xml, my Target line will look like this:
"C:\Ashita\Ashita.exe" "C:/Ashita/Config/Boot/PrivateServer.xml"

Remember the quotes! They are important. After that just click CLOSE to save the changes. Now just double-click Ashita to launch FFXi via Steam and the Steam Overylay should work fine.

Keep in mind Ashita does its own hooks and such to the keyboard/mouse. This may interfer with the Steam Overlay. If this is the case there is nothing we can do to avoid conflicts. Ashita does what it does to ensure that it properly over-takes what is needed in FFXi. There is no simple way to determine that the Steam Overlay is in-use or visible so we cannot add checks for it.

Thank you so much for the guide! I followed it, and it launches with the config, but the steam status changes to say that I'm not ingame shortly after. It doesn't want to load the overlay at all. I think I'll probably keep trying to mess with it- it might be one of the settings is off or something. XD

I've had this issue as well where a friend could run Minecraft from the exact same launcher I was using with the steam overlay and status working fine. The only difference between our configurations was that she was using an older 32 bit operating system whereas I was on a 64. Steam gets dicky sometimes with overlays on 64 bit java installations.

Yeah, it's been like that on Minecraft for me as well. :\ I think it might have to do with me running the game in fullscreen, possibly. I'm going to edit that in the config utility and see if anything changes!

Strange update- so I reinstalled Ashita by placing the files in C:/Ashita, however, now it doesn't seem to recognize my copy of FFXI. (It's the steam version, but idk if that makes a difference) Every time I start it, it crashes after login. I think it used to do this before, but I forget how I fixed it.

If you have TeamViewer I can take a look for you.
