Set it up in VM and give them remote access to it through team viewer ?

i seriously don't understand why people would go out of their way to use teamviewer for something like this, when windows has a remote desktop protocol built in.

If I were you, this is what i'd do:
Set up the machine so it can be seen from the outside world, by forwarding external port 3389 to interal 3389. That's your rdp protocol. On your server right click on my computer, click properties, on the left side there will be remote settings. Open that, and enable. Give your friend, roommate, heterosexual life partner your login information for that box. The account *must* have a password or you will not be able to log in. Then have your friend, roommate, or heterosexual life partner go to their computer, go to start > run, type mstsc, and type in your external ip address if not on your local network. This will connect to your server and give them a desktop view of it on their computer.
